Why Solar PV

The new standard for smart energy

The UK energy landscape has reached a turning point. Over the last 15 years, Solar PV has evolved from a niche "early adopter" technology into a proven, high performance asset for the modern home.

With over 1.5 million UK homes already generating their own power, we are moving past the first generation of solar. Today, Solar PV isn't just an "eco friendly" choice, it is a sophisticated financial strategy to protect your household from volatile energy markets.

At Energy Giants, we help you move from being an energy consumer to an energy producer.

Why 2026 is the year of energy independence

While only 5% of UK homes currently utilise solar, that number is accelerating. As we approach 30 million homes nationwide, the "wait and see" period is over. The technology is optimised, the warranties are robust, and the returns are clear.

How does solar work?

Solar panels turn UV rays into electricity using photovoltaics (PV). Even on cloudy UK days, they still generate power because they use light, not heat.

Why should I get solar PV?

Solar PV is one of the few home upgrades that reduces your bills immediately, protects you from rising energy prices, and increases your home's value.

When should I get solar?

The best time is as soon as you're ready, the financial benefits start the moment the system is switched on.

Benefits

Why go solar

Lower energy bills

Generate your own electricity and dramatically cut what you buy from the grid each month.

25 year price protection

Shield yourself from volatile utility prices and the 'big six' hikes for decades to come.

Cut your carbon

Power your home with clean, renewable energy and shrink your household carbon footprint.

Add value to your home

Solar panels increase home value by 6 to 14%. Buyers are attracted to lower energy bills and better EPC ratings.

Battery storage ready

Store power generated by day and use it at night. Charge overnight on lower tariffs and use during peak hours.

Earn from what you export

Get paid for surplus electricity you send back to the grid. Shop around utility companies for the best export rates.

FAQs

Solar questions, answered

Does solar really work in the UK?

Absolutely, solar works far better in the UK than most people expect. The idea that the UK is "too cloudy" is a myth. It's UV rays that power the panels, not direct sunlight, so they work through clouds too.

Are there still grants available?

Yes. The main route is the Warm Homes Plan, which can fund solar, insulation and heating upgrades for qualifying households. Some local councils offer extra support through LA Flex. If you don't qualify, all residential solar, battery and insulation installations are zero rated for VAT until March 2027, saving £1,000 to £2,000 on a typical system.

How many panels can fit on my roof?

We use an online platform to locate your house and provisionally see how many panels can be installed. We also attend the property to confirm in person to make sure you receive the best survey possible.

How much does it all cost?

This depends on the number of panels, size of battery, size of inverter and the manufacturers of the components. Prices start from £3,000.

Do I need a battery?

Most Solar PV systems benefit from a battery to store energy generated but not used immediately. The battery can also be charged overnight on lower tariffs and used during peak hours. However, not all systems benefit financially, this is assessed during the onsite survey.

What's the return on investment?

A standard return on investment should be from 4 years onwards, depending on the size of the system, energy generated, cost of the system and your current energy tariffs.

Is my roof suitable for solar?

South facing roofs maximise output, but east/west roofs still perform well. During your free survey we check orientation, pitch, shading and structure, then design a system to suit.

Do I need planning permission?

For most homes, no. Solar panels are usually classed as Permitted Development. Conditions include: panels don't protrude more than 200mm from the roof surface, your home is not listed, and you're not in a conservation area.

What types of panels work best?

Monocrystalline solar panels are the best overall choice for homes, highest efficiency, longest lifespan, and best performance in low light conditions, which matters in the UK's climate.

How long do solar panels last?

Most modern solar panels last 25 to 30 years, and many continue producing electricity for 30 to 40 years with only gradual efficiency loss.

Should I choose 'in roof' or 'on roof' panels?

In roof panels replace the tiles and sit flush, they're more aesthetically pleasing and just as efficient. On roof panels sit above the tiles on rails. If you're getting a new roof, in roof is actually cheaper per square foot than tiles.

Can I sell energy back to the grid?

Yes, you liaise with a utility company to set up an export tariff. The company paying you doesn't have to be your current energy supplier, so you can shop around for the best rates.

Do solar panels add value to my property?

Yes. Multiple UK property experts report that solar panels increase home value by 6 to 14%, as buyers are attracted to lower energy bills, better EPC ratings, and long term savings.
