The current recommendation is 270mm. We install insulation between and over the joists to achieve this depth, ensuring maximum thermal performance for your loft.
Yes, you can still use your loft for storage with raised boarding installed above the insulation. This keeps the insulation at full depth while giving you a solid surface for storage.
We insulate loft hatches too. An uninsulated loft hatch is a common source of heat loss, so we fit insulation and draught proofing strips to ensure a complete thermal barrier.

Usually, yes. If the existing layer is dry and in reasonable condition we lay new mineral wool across the joists on top of it to reach 270 mm. If it is damp, compressed or has been disturbed by wiring and storage it comes out first. The survey tells you which.
Funding changes often, so ask us for the current position. As of September 2026 the Warm Homes: Local Grant, run through councils, funds insulation for eligible lower income households, and social landlords have the Warm Homes: Social Housing Fund. We deliver under these programmes for councils and landlords, and we will tell a homeowner honestly whether they are likely to qualify.
