How it works

How an Air Source Heat Pump works

ASHPs extract heat from outdoor air, even at temperatures as low as -15°C, and use it to warm your home and hot water. They are 3 to 4x more efficient than traditional boilers, delivering 3 to 4 units of heat for every 1 unit of electricity used.

Diagram showing how an air source heat pump works, refrigerant absorbing heat from outdoor air and releasing it indoors via heat exchangers, compressor and expansion device
1

Absorbs heat from air

A fan draws outside air over an evaporator containing refrigerant, which absorbs the heat energy.

2

Compresses & heats

A compressor increases the temperature of the refrigerant to a usable level for heating.

3

Transfers heat to your home

The hot refrigerant passes through a heat exchanger, warming water for your radiators, underfloor heating, and taps.

Benefits

FAQs

Heat pump questions, answered

What is an air source heat pump?

An ASHP absorbs heat from outside air and transfers it into your home via a heat pump unit. It works like a fridge in reverse, extracting warmth from the air even in cold temperatures and using it to heat your radiators, underfloor heating, and hot water.

How much does an ASHP cost?

Typical costs are £8,000 to £14,000 before grants. With the BUS grant of up to £7,500, your cost could be as low as £500. We provide a full breakdown during your free home survey.

Will it work in cold weather?

Yes, modern ASHPs work efficiently down to -15°C. They are widely used in Scandinavian countries with much harsher winters than the UK, so they are more than capable of keeping your home warm year round.

Do I need planning permission?

Usually not required as ASHPs fall under permitted development rights. However, we always recommend checking with your local authority, especially for listed buildings or properties in conservation areas. We can advise you during the survey.

What maintenance is required?

An annual service is recommended, similar to a boiler service. Filters should be cleaned regularly, and the outdoor unit should be kept clear of debris and leaves. Overall maintenance is minimal compared to traditional heating systems.
